Abstract
Cholesterol embolism, a complication of ulcerous atherosclerosis, is a pathologic process of small arteries in many organs of the body by cholesterol cystals, causing a multiple-system disease. Cholesterol embolism is to be differentiated from
acheroembolism, the other type of atheromatous embolism, which results in the obstruction of a large artery in one organ. Also it should be distintguished from vasculitis, connctive tissue disease or infective endocarditis which causes multiple
system
dysfunction.
Cholesterol embolization can occur spontaneously but usually develops as a complication of vascular procedures. As the invasive vascular procedures such as arteriography or angioplasty have been used popularly for a diagnostic or therapeutic
purpose,
cholesterol embolization is expected to occur in patients with high risk factors for atherosclerosis.
We report tow cases of cholesterol embolization as socjated with renal failure and gangrene of the lower extremities after coronary angiography, proven by renal biopsy.
